We want Excellence in Cosmetic Dentistry 2009 to not only be a memorable experience for our members, but also their spouses and guests. The Greet, Eat, and Meet (GEM) program brings spouses and guests of registered attendees together in Honolulu for some fun and exploration of
the Hawaiian Island, Oahu, and it’s vibrant culture. Who knows, you just might foster a
great friendship along the way. Some of the many GEM activities may include:
Cultural Connection – Hawaiian Arts and Cultural Experience
Ho‘okahua means “to lay a foundation.” The concept of this special event is
to provide, through sharing and interaction, a Hawaiian cultural, educational,
and entertaining experience. It is a free-flowing experience, where participants
may stay in one area or visit many. The program is divided into three parts: an
opening, the halau experience (a place where each activity is linked to a
cultural relevance of interdependence between humans, their beliefs, and their
environment),
and a closing.
Cultural experiences may include:
• Halau of Wellness – experience healing through touch and the traditional
Hawaiian practice of using herbs, plants, prayer, and faith to facilitate healing
• Halau of the Arts – enjoy hula (native Hawaiian dance with chant) and lei
(garland)
making
• Halau of Fine Arts – try plaiting (braiding), weaving, and kapa (fabric found
in ancient Hawaii made of beaten mulberry bark) printing
• Halau of Music – make some noise – beat the ipu (percussion instrument made
from gourds), play the ‘ohe puluka (bamboo flute), and strum the ‘ukulele (small guitar)
Honolulu Food Tour – Celebrate the Plate
Food and Hawaii, a matched pair since Captain Cook named Hawaii the
Sandwich Isles. Often referred to as the “melting pot of the Pacific” –
whatever is cooking in the pot sure smells good!
In the best Hawaiian traditions, food is to be shared, enjoyed, and most
importantly, not forgotten. Get ready to explore, sample, and savor Hawaiian
regional cuisine, or “local-style food.” As the renowned chef and food writer
Matthew Gray says “…is not about Hawaiian food, rather it’s but the food of Hawaii.”
Homes of Hawaiian Royalty Revisited
Since 1845, Honolulu has served as capitol to the various forms of government –
kingdom, republic, territory, and state – that has presided over Hawaiian Islands.
The ruling monarchs made their homes and seat of government in this unique city.
Today, Honolulu is a cosmopolitan city of cultural diversity and historical significance.
Discover the homes of Hawaiian royalty first-hand as you visit locations, such as,
‘Iolani Place, Queen Emma Summer Palace, Kamehameha Statue, and Historic Honolulu – Kawaiaha’o Church, Honolulu Hale, and Chinatown.
Photography Walk
Digital photography is a mainstay in most families today, the new and, for most,
easy way to preserve and record family experiences. You will begin with an
orientation to the creative process, an encouragement to your creativity. Then, led by your professional photographer guide, you will explore your temporary island home. With a
little guidance, and your natural creative flair, objects, scenes, and landscapes come
“newly alive.”
As a registered spouse or guest of Excellence in Cosmetic Dentistry 2009, all of
this can be yours to explore, in addition to:
• Continental breakfasts in the exhibit hall
• Motivational morning general sessions
• Lunches in the exhibit hall
• AACD Welcome Reception
• Applicable lectures, which include two lectures geared toward spouses
To register for the GEM program, you will need to register for the 25th Anniversary
AACD Scientific Session as a spouse or guest. Space is limited, so make sure to select
your GEM activities online once course selection opens on December 5, 2008.
The above GEM program activities are samples of some of the activities that will
take place and are subject to change. .
